Parking & Transportation

Northshore Learning Options does not offer bus transportation at this time.

Parking: parking is allowed on the street and in the lot across from the fire station.

Drop-Off times: Classes for NFP and NN begin at 9:00 AM, the earliest families can drop-off their student(s) is 8:40 AM or ten minutes before their first class.

As we will have limited supervision in the morning, our playground will be closed. Students who arrive between 8:40am-9am are able to congregate in the library as staff members will be assigned to that area for supervision and support. In the library, students are welcome to socialize, relax, read, engage in independent activities/work, etc. Once our 9am bell rings, students will transition to their classes and attendance will be taken.
Each morning, we will have a greeter just outside of our primary gate to welcome our arriving students as families circle the first parking lot. As drivers pull forward to the designated cone (see map below) students can hop out and head to the library. We ask that vehicles pull forward all the way to ‘star’ on the map for efficiency and to ensure that students are not exiting their vehicle into a busy parking lot. The parking spaces just in front of the gate will be coned off throughout the day, so families will be able to pull as close to the curb as possible

Mid-Day Arrivals: Since we have students who arrive and leave campus at later times, we will have a staff member outside to greet students or see them to their vehicle for pick-up five minutes before each period (For example, if your student’s last class of the day is from 1pm- 1:55pm, a staff member will at be stationed at the pick-up/drop-off point (the star) by 1:50pm)

Late Arrival: It happens! If you’re running late and your student arrives on campus outside of the pick- up/drop-off time, you are welcome to park in the front lot to bring your student inside. Importantly, students need to check in at the front desk so we can mark their arrival time and attendance. Attendance is taken and submitted to the office at the start of each class period, and it’s critical that we know who is on campus at any given time in the event of an emergency. If arriving late, please do not walk your student directly to their class as we need to monitor attendance with our front office folks. Following the check-in at the front desk, we will happily transition your student to their classroom.

Lunch/Recess: Students enrolled in Period 2 or 3 classes may stay for mid-day lunch and recess.

Pick-Up time: promptly at the end of class.

Speed Limit: School traffic zone speed limit is 5 miles per hour.

General Safety reminders:

All visitors must sign in at the office when arriving and wear a visitor lanyard while on campus. It is very important for us to be able to identify who is on campus in the event of an emergency.
Volunteers are required to undergo a background check prior to working in classrooms or as a volunteer on campus. If you have not already done so, you can start here: https://www.nsd.org/get-involved/volunteer/become-a-volunteer
Please be sure your emergency contact lists are updated and accurate. In order for us to release a student to an adult other than the primary parent/guardian, those names need to be listed on a child’s school record. If you need to add names or make changes to your emergency contact information, please contact the front office.

Car Drop-Off/Pick-Up

Location: At the front of the school, near the chainlink fence.

Drop-Off: 8:40-9:00 AM

Pick-Up: 2:50 PM (12:00 PM on Early Release Wednesdays)

Car Pick-Up Waiting Area Map and Protocol:

Student pick-up (end of school day 2:50pm): While we do have students who leave campus at different times in the day, the busiest time would be following the final period of the school day at 2:50pm. Most students enrolled in our Networks program will have left by this time, however we will have a good deal of elementary age students transitioning from campus during this window of time. The process will feel familiar to last year, however there are a few tweaks introduced in the spirit of ensuring that every student is handed off with care and safety in mind.

As this is the busiest time for pick-up, we’ll have a good deal of staff on hand each day to support the pick-up process

Families tend to arrive early in anticipation for dismissal and the line of vehicles can often form as early as 2:20ish. To ensure our vehicle line is not stretched too far out onto the public street, our end of day line will look a bit different than the morning. (See map below)
Vehicles will drive the length of the campus using the back parking lot as a loop with the first vehicle in line ending at the same drop off point as the morning. (Star on the map)
When dismissed from class, our students will join their peers in grade level groupings under our covered walkway just behind the first fence (the groupings are marked by grade level). We will have staff on hand to supervise and support our students while they are waiting to be reunited with their adult
Display your pink, laminated name card on the passenger side window. This allows our staff to identity which students we’ll need to pair with each vehicle (If you have not yet received this card, your student will be sent home with it after their first day of class. If you do not have a pink, laminated card for your student, please contact our front office.
As drivers pull forward, a staff member will read the card and radio the staff members supervising the students. The students will be brought forward and supported while getting into their vehicles.
Drivers will then follow the exit route off campus.

Safety Reminders:

School traffic zone speed limit is 5 miles per hour
Parents need to remain in the car. Students should exit and enter from the curb side
Please pull as far forward as possible within the designated zone. This will allow for cars to get through the zone in a more timely manner
Only drop off your student in full sight of the supervisor
Please do not use your cell phones while in the school traffic zone

Walking

While the majority of the folks who pick up their students come via car, we do have some who prefer to walk to campus.

Much like the students who are waiting to be picked up via car, they will wait in their assigned area just behind the fence while being supervised by staff.
Our family walkers will form a line on the sidewalk just outside of the gate opening (see pic below).
A staff member will make contact with the family and radio to the staff to release the student to the walking family.
Even though a student and adult may be able to see one another, it’s important that the hand-off be supported and facilitated by a staff member. Please wait until your student is called forward by the staff member.
Once reunited with their adult, families are welcome to walk off campus. We do know that some of our families like to stay on the playground following the 2:50 PM dismissal. This is perfectly fine! The playground gate will be unlocked just before pick-up and families are welcome to walk to the playground with their student.

Parking is available in the overflow parking lot adjacent to the fire station (see map below) and along the street. To facilitate pick up and drop off procedures, the parking spaces just in front of the school will be coned off during the day when students are on campus.

Student parking and vehicle registration: We are a campus that serves Kindergarten through twelfth grade, so we do have student drivers! As has been the case in years past, our student drivers will park in the overflow parking lot Although the parking lot is just outside of the main campus, it is an extension of the school and we are responsible for ensuring it is utilized in a safe and responsible manner. When our student drivers arrive on campus, they can park their vehicles in the overflow parking lot and walk to the main building following the connecting sidewalk. Like all students, if they arrive late, they must check into the front office before heading to class.

It is important for us to know who is on campus at any given time. Accordingly, all students (and staff) will be required to register their vehicle with our front office in order for us to safely monitor our parking lot. This is important as it allows us to pay attention to vehicles that should not be parked on campus.

Back (North) Parking Lot: Our back parking lot, beyond the school buildings, is reserved for staff and NSD employees. Please do not park or drop your student off in this lot.
